My Baby Won’t Stop Crying, What Do I Do?
Welcoming a newborn into the world is a joyous occasion, but it can also be overwhelming, especially when your baby won’t stop crying. As a new parent, it’s natural to feel anxious and unsure about how to respond. However, there are several things you can try to soothe your crying baby.
Rule Out The Basics
First, check if your baby is hungry, or has a dirty diaper. Sometimes, these basic needs can cause discomfort and lead to crying. If your baby is fed and has a clean diaper, consider that they might be tired. Babies will often cry when they are tired, and they need our support to get back to sleep.
Soothing
If your baby is fed, rested and clean but still fussy, then you need to use your parenting toolbox to assess if something is wrong. We strongly recommend the 5 S’s. [Swaying, sucking, swaddling, sound, and utilizing the side-lying position.
You can try rocking or walking with them. You can also take them outside or in a different room to just try to change the scene. Taking your baby outside, especially if a parent has the opportunity to be barefoot and take a few deep breaths can help reset both baby and caregiver.
Realistic Expectations
It’s important to remember that crying is normal for newborns, and it doesn’t last forever. Research shows that most babies experience a period of increased crying, usually beginning just a few months after birth. As a new parent, it’s essential to take care of yourself too. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, call a friend or relative for support or to take care of the baby while you take a break.
If nothing seems to work, and your baby is inconsolable, it’s okay to put them down in a safe place, like an empty crib, and take a break. During that time, try to relax and calm down by doing something you enjoy, like taking a warm bath or listening to music.
Remember, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to ask for help. If you’re concerned about your baby’s crying, and/or your baby won’t stop crying for hours on end without relief, talk to your doctor, who can help rule out any underlying medical issues.
With patience, love, and support, you’ll find what works best for you and your baby.
