My Baby is Gassy, What Do I Do?

Welcoming a newborn into the world is a joyous occasion, but it can also be a challenging time for new parents. One common issue that parents face is that their baby is gassy. If you find yourself asking, “My baby is gassy, what do I do?” don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here are some tips to help alleviate your baby’s gas discomfort.

  1. Burp your baby frequently: Burping your baby after every feeding can help release any trapped air in their stomach. Hold your baby upright against your chest and gently pat their back until they burp.
  2. Change your feeding position: If you’re breastfeeding, try different positions to see what works best for your baby for them to get an efficient latch. If you’re bottle-feeding, make sure the nipple is the right size and that your baby is not taking in too much air.
  3. Massage your baby’s tummy: Gently massaging your baby’s tummy in a clockwise motion can help move gas through their digestive system.
  4. Hold your baby in different positions: Bicycling legs or holding baby’s legs up to their belly can help alleviate discomfort for them.
  5. Use gas drops: Over-the-counter gas drops can help break up gas bubbles in your baby’s stomach. You can use them regularly or as-needed. [Always consult with your pediatrician before giving your baby any medication.]
  6. Try a different formula: If you’re bottle-feeding, your baby may be sensitive to the formula you’re using. Talk to your pediatrician about trying a different formula that may be easier for your baby to digest.

Remember, it’s normal for babies to be slightly gassy, and it usually resolves on its own as their digestive system matures. However, if your baby seems to be in pain or discomfort, or if you notice any other concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact your pediatrician. They might have colic, reflux, or something more serious might be going on.

With a little patience and some trial and error, you can help your gassy baby feel more comfortable and content.
