Blackout Curtains Vs Blackout Shades

When it comes to newborn sleep, parents are always looking for ways to help their little ones get the rest they need. One popular solution is to use blackout curtains vs blackout shades to block out light and create a dark, sleep-friendly environment. As sleep consultants and newborn care specialists, we strongly believe that a dark room is part of the bigger puzzle of a well rested newborn [and well rested parents].

But which is better: blackout curtains or shades?

Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains are probably the most popular choice for parents looking to create a dark sleep environment for their babies. These curtains are typically made from thick, light-blocking fabric that helps to keep out sunlight and streetlights.

The thing about blackout curtains, is that they aren’t all equal. And unfortunately sometimes you don’t notice until you already have them installed!

What we recommend to look for when you’re shopping for curtains:

  1. How are they advertised. Sometimes they’ll say “partial-dark” or “100% blackout” or a variety of terms. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true, but at least you can understand the intention.
  2. How are they sized. Curtains should be installed above the window with enough space that the light doesn’t spill right over top, and ideally have enough space to cover the sides of the window as well.
  3. Reviews. Personally, I believe black-out curtains shouldn’t be an impulse buy at job lot. Target, Amazon and most home-goods stores have reviews of different curtains online. Spend a few minutes making sure that the quality matches up with your intention.

Blackout Shades

Blackout shades are another option for parents looking to create a dark sleep environment for their babies. These shades are made from a variety of materials, including vinyl, fabric, and paper. Because of the materials used, we find that most black-out shades do what they say and do not let light through.

HOWEVER- The big issue is that they don’t always fit the window correctly. A black out shade that only covers 90% of the window will let through enough light to encourage early rising in your infant. Make sure that you are measuring correctly.

Our favorite blackout shades are the cheapest option [although not the most fashionable]. Redi-shades are paper shades that can be cut exactly to the size and shape of your window. They are accordion and can be clipped up, but most parents just choose to keep the nursery dark. If you use tacks or an industrial stapler they will stay put for a LONG time. After a year or two the sun does bleach them a bit and they go from 100% blackout to letting a bit of light through, but they are inexpensive enough to easily re-do the process if having professional shades seems to big of an expense or hassle.

Which is Better? Blackout Curtains Vs Blackout Shades

Both blackout curtains and shades can be effective at creating a dark sleep environment for babies. Ultimately, the choice between curtains and shades will depend on your personal preferences, sense of style, logistics and the needs of your baby. Our recommendation if you end up having a baby that is REALLY sensitive to light is actually to tag team both options. A dark curtain over a dark shade provides no room for error.

In general, blackout curtains are a good choice if you’re looking for a durable, long-lasting solution that also provides thermal insulation. But you might want to think to the future to a toddler walking around trying to pull them down!

Blackout shades, on the other hand, may be a better choice if you’re looking for a more affordable option that can be easily replaced as your baby grows. Make sure any shades don’t have any handing strings that can be a strangulation hazard.

No matter which option you choose, creating a dark, safe sleep-friendly environment is an important step in helping your baby get the rest they need. With the right set up and a little bit of patience, you can help your baby develop healthy sleep habits that will last a lifetime.
