Daytime Sleep Environment for a Newborn
As a new parent, you want to ensure that your baby is safe and comfortable while sleeping. Creating a safe sleep environment for your newborn is essential to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related accidents. While safety is number one, we also want to help parents understand how to get their baby napping more restfully and more consistently. Here are some recommendations for a daytime sleep environment for a newborn.
Safe Daytime Newborn Sleep: [AAP Guidelines]
- Keep the sleeping area free of any loose bedding, pillows, or toys that could pose a suffocation hazard.
- Place your baby on their back to sleep, as this is the safest position for them.
- Use a firm and flat sleep surface, such as a crib or bassinet, that meets current safety standards.
- Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, between 68-72°F, to prevent overheating.
Quality Daytime Newborn Sleep:
- Try to keep nap times consistent and allow your baby to fall asleep on their own when possible so they can learn to self-soothe. [This is easy the first few weeks/months but get’s harder as they age if they aren’t allowed to practice.]
- Consider using a white noise machine to create a soothing sleep environment for your baby.
- Use a swaddle to keep your newborn warm and secure while sleeping. [We recommend swaddling for every time your baby sleeps!]
- Put them in a dark/dim environment. Just because your baby can sleep in the middle of a busy living room doesn’t mean that it’s the most restful environment for them.
By following these tips, you can create a safe and comfortable daytime sleep environment for your newborn. Remember, a safe sleep environment is essential for your baby’s health and well-being. Want to learn more? Check out our video series that teaches all about the ins and outs of newborn sleep!
