Should I use a crib mobile?
Parents often ask me when they are setting up their nursery: “Should I use a crib mobile?” And I want to start this article off saying that there isn’t any strong evidence on either side. At the end of the day- you should do what feels right as a parent.
However, many parents don’t feel confident in their choices…and that’s why they reach out to us!
What is a Crib Mobile?

A crib mobile is something that hangs over the crib that your baby can look up at. They can be bright or muted, they may play sound, they may move, and some may even light up.
Why would someone use a Crib Mobile?
- To offer your baby stimulation and something to look at.
- To aesthetically make the nursery look cute.
- Some believe that their baby will enjoy their crib more with a little entertainment.
Why would you recommend against a Crib Mobile?
1. Safety
Not all Mobile’s are created equal. And even the best quality Mobile may have a user error while setting up. Cords and strings can be a dangerous hazard, and a heavy plastic mobile could severely injure a newborn if it falls directly over their head.
I find it best to recommend nothing hanging over the crib for this reason. Even wall art and light fixtures should be way out of reach and extremely well-secured.
2. Quality of Sleep
We always recommend no/low stimulation in the sleep space. From day one we believe that babies are capable of quality independent sleep. An ideal sleep space is very dark, with muted colors and nothing to look at/distract them from sleep. If they are looking at a mobile it might send mixed messages that it’s playtime vs sleep time.
So…Should I use a Crib Mobile?
Closing thoughts are that Mobiles can be a really great developmental tool…but they probably shouldn’t be used in the crib. Maybe a pack n play in the living room, or hanging over an area where they lay on a mat…but not in a safe sleep space.

If you really want to use a Mobile in your crib we ask that you follow these “rules”:
- Make sure it is tightly secured and has no chance of falling on your baby.
- Don’t use anything with loud noises or bright lights.
- Discontinue use before your baby starts sitting/pulling up.
