Different Types of White Noise
When parents are looking into tools to help their baby sleep, they often talk about getting a sound machine that plays white noise. White noise is a popular type of sound that is often used to help newborns [and adults] sleep, or relax. But did you know there are Different Types of White Noise?
There are actually several types of noise that fall under the umbrella of “white noise.” And most of them aren’t officially white noise at all! Some sound machines only have one type, while others have a variety. [We’re big fans of lectrofan.]
In this blog, we’ll explore the different types of noise and how they can be used.
White Noise
White noise is a type of sound that contains all frequencies at equal levels. This means that it sounds like a hissing or static noise. [Does anyone remember Tv Static anymore?] While white noise is the most well-known type of noise, there are actually several other types of noise.
Pink Noise:
Pink noise is similar to white noise, but it has more power in the lower frequencies. This means that it sounds deeper and more natural than white noise.
Brown Noise:
Brown noise is similar to pink noise, but it has even more power in the lower frequencies. This means that it sounds even deeper and more natural than pink noise.
Comparing Noises:
White, Brown and Pink noise are all used for sleep and relaxation. [There are other color noises such as blue and gray too!] So what type of noise is best for you and your baby?
We typically recommend pink noise or brown noise over white noise. It’s easier to listen to and can help diffuse more outside noises. If you have a loud home, sometimes we recommend putting a brown noise machine inside the nursery and a pink noise machine outside the nursery!
In general, we recommend that parents experiment with different types of white noise and find the one that works best for you! Sometimes even a fan or an air purifier can provide the perfect noise buffer.
