Choosing a Formula

Why can the simple task of choosing a formula become controversial? Most parents choose to move forward with whatever formula they start with at the hospital, or whatever samples were sent to them, or whatever is convenient.

Many times this works out just fine. All of the formulas on the market in the USA have to meet the same safety regulations. Unfortunately, not all formulas are created equal. When choosing a formula it mostly comes down to the ingredients.

Formula Ingredients:

In the US, formulas have to have a certain range of calories from fat, protein and carbs as well as specified amounts of vitamins and minerals…but the sourcing of the ingredients vary widely.

When choosing baby food parents will often reach for labels with ingredients that they recognize, but many of these same parents will reach for a formula without even turning to look at the label.

Some formulas have organically sourced ingredients, others have broken down milk proteins so they are easier to digest, and still others are made from goat milk or even soy milk.

Trying More Than One Formula:

We work with hundreds of babies every year, helping to get them to sleep better. When we do sleep assessments, one of the first things we ask of parents is how their baby is fed. More often than you would think, a formula change turns their baby from cranky and restless to calm and able to sleep for longer stretches at night.

The message we would like to get across is that what formula works for one baby, might not work for another. You may have to try 2, 3 or even 4 formulas before you find that magic fit. We strongly recommend trying each formula for at least 2 weeks to let your baby get adjusted.

What are your favorite formulas?

The following are formulas that our clients have had the best luck with!

  • Hipp – This is a European formula
  • Holle Goat Milk – This is a European formula
  • Bobbie – This can be available on a subscription, and uses European standards
  • Baby’s Only – Really easy on the belly, many options for iron, DRA, broken down proteins ect
  • Honorable mention for Similac Alimentum ready made for babies with a milk protein sensitivity
